How long will my Instagarden last?
Instagarden rails and connectors are constructed from food-grade UV-resistant high density polyethylene resin, and are designed to last for decades. We have used them in the heavy UV of Colorado sunshine at 5,000 feet for over ten years, and all are doing fine. Over a period of 20 to 40 years the forest green rails (not currently available) will fade to black in color. Instagarden rails and connectors are guaranteed against structural failure for a period of seven (7) years.

What’s the difference between sandboxes and raised bed gardens?
Structures one rail high (7¾ inches) are perfect for sandboxes. Higher walls are generally unnecessary.
Structures two rails high (15½ inches) make the best raised bed gardens in the world. Although you can successfully garden with structures one rail high, plants do much, much better with the extra soil depth. Plus, the micro greenhouse system is designed for structures two rails high, and may not perform properly with structures one rail high.
Experiment! A one rail high structure filled with lava rocks is a superb growing environment for perennials such as Columbine, the Colorado State Flower.
How big is an Instagarden raised bed garden?
Each Instagarden rail is 42 inches long, 7¾ inches high, and 2¾ inches wide.
A double square has nine square feet of gardening space and is 42 inches on a side and 15½ inches high.
A double pentagon has sixteen square feet of gardening space and is 63 inches from top to bottom and 15½ inches high.
A double hexagon has 24 square feet of gardening space, is 72 inches from side to side, 83 inches from corner to corner, and 15½ inches high.
What site preparation is required?
You will need to pick a good location for your raised bed garden or sandbox. Place your raised bed garden in a sunny location, to the south side of any buildings, fences, or trees. Place your sandbox in a level location free of hazards, and preferably in the shade.
You will need to put a ground cover such as landscape fabric under your sandbox if you are placing it on top of grass. No ground cover is needed for raised bed gardens.
Your raised bed garden must be level to add a summer structure framework. To level your garden, remove soil from under some rails until all the rails are level with each other.
Fill with sand or soil and enjoy!
What are Instagardens made of?
Instagarden rails and connectors are constructed from food-grade UV-resistant high density polyethylene resin. You may find things in your kitchen made of the same material, especially large containers for storing food. Look for the #2 recycling symbol on the bottom of the container.
Can I use my string trimmer with my Instagarden?
We use string trimmers in the Instagarden test garden. The high density polyethylene resin is very hard and the string trimmers we have tested have made no noticeable marks on our Instagardens. Test your string trimmer on an inconspicuous part of your Instagarden to make sure, then use your string trimmer without worrying.
I want to make a larger structure. Are longer connectors available?
Connectors of any length are available by special order. Connectors for structures up to five rails high are in stock and immediately available. E-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
Can I make a rectangle with my double hexagon kit instead of a hexagon?
Yes. You will need to stake the two connections in the middle of your rectangle with three foot long pieces of rebar or other material. Check for underground utilities such as electric, cable, gas, or phone before proceeding. Use eye protection when installing your stakes. For best results, cut spacers 380 mm long of commercial high-density polyethylene (HDPE) irrigation pipe in ¾ and ½ inch diameters to place between the rebar and the Instagarden connectors.
